Issue 95  is a very odd issue indeed. It would be easy to think, looking at the index to the left, that there’s not much in this issue. That couldn’t be further from the truth. This issue’s On Track news section is a whopping 24 pages in size – more than half the issue. It’s this size for two reasons, which is sort of one reason actually. As we do every year, included in the news are reports from the IAAPA Expo in Orlando, and there was a lot of news to be had, something that is always a good thing.

With so many rides being built, the construction reports take up most of those 24 pages, and show that we have a very exciting 2013 on our hands, with 2014 already shaping up to be pretty special as well. There doesn’t appear to be a huge number of new rides going into Europe for 2013, but the quality of what there is, is very high. There is also Vialand in Turkey, which is shaping up pretty well, and is something Turkey has been in need of for some time. There’s also the major expansion at Etnaland in Sicily that really propels what was basically a water park with a few water rides, into a large resort park. In the UK, Merlin is again using some “interesting” marketing to promote Smiler, the Gerstlauer multi-looper at Alton Towers. Now, in the UK, we’ve had to “endure” their marketing for many years, and to be honest, I really wish they’d stop. The problem is they really oversell rides with hype they simply can’t live up to. I happen to like Thirteen at Alton Towers, it’s a fine ride, but it’s not the ride sold to the public. Now the issue with Smiler is that it does look like it’s going to be a hugely impressive thrill ride, with so many loops and inversions crammed into such a small space, it is sure to be a real head spinner. But it’s being sold as something more – something that “manipulates your mind”… Hmm… I don’t get why being a great coaster isn’t enough – Nemesis certainly was.

As well as the monster news/ride construction section, you’ll also find a couple of ride reports that had to be held over from the previous issue due to space issues. I really wanted to include them, so although the rides are close to a year old now, I still think they are worth reading. With Linz becoming our new Chairman, it’s great to welcome Kevin Winkley to the team as Club Secretary. Kev’ already does a brilliant job masterminding the quiz at Oakwood, so it’s great to welcome him into a more Club wide role.
